Chapter Nineteen

CUPPING SAWYER’S cheek, Miles took slow care in lifting his chin. He brushed his thumb over Sawyer’s stubbly, warm skin. This wasn’t the setup for a rough and dirty kiss, but rather a heartfelt, romantic display of the kindness and beauty Sawyer captured in his pictures.

Miles leaned his head down and their mouths connected, caressed. For a moment, he didn’t move, didn’t spread his lips and let his tongue take over. For a moment, he simply savored the taste of lips he’d been craving for four agonizing days.

Soft moans encouraged Miles to go further, to allow more and claim more. He loosened his jaw, parting his lips. His body lost all rigidity. Miles melted into the kiss and gave himself over to the warmth and fullness he felt when he had Sawyer close by.

Of their own volition, his arms wrapped around Sawyer. He held that wonderful man against him, guiding Sawyer backward with body and mouth until Sawyer lay on the couch with Miles’s weight pressed against him. They were going too far again, and again, Miles didn’t want to let it end.

He pressed his tongue through the barrier of lips and slipped it deep into Sawyer’s mouth. The taste he’d been craving exploded onto his tongue. Without thought, Miles ground himself against Sawyer, feeling distinctly that they were both thoroughly turned on by what was happening. Thank God they still had their clothes on, Miles thought. While sex with Sawyer sounded like a phenomenal idea right now, what would become of them afterward? Did Miles really want to be the second man Sawyer had ever had sex with, knowing in three months they would part ways?

No. He didn’t. Any other man might not have mattered, but this was Sawyer—kind, innocent, compassionate, talented Sawyer. And that’d been the reason for the cooling-down period after their date. Not because Miles had been too busy. Not because Sawyer had been too busy. But because Miles’s desire was going to get the best of him if he didn’t put a lock on it, which was impossible to do in Sawyer’s presence.

Ruefully, Miles broke the kiss and lifted enough to slide behind Sawyer and lie down on the couch to spoon against him. He kept the kid in his arms, holding on tight because it felt wrong to give him any less. Miles closed his eyes, mind and heart at war with each other over the decision each had made.

“Why did you stop?” Sawyer asked. His voice was hoarse, barely a whisper, even in the quiet of the dimly lit office. It echoed off the metal walls and reverberated those four disappointed words for Miles to hear over and over again.

“Do you want the truth?”

“Please.”

Even though Miles had made the offer, yet again, to be honest… yet again, he didn’t think he could be. Being honest meant he would have to admit to himself he cared about Sawyer a lot, more than he should have.

Cared? Wait. Is that the right word?

“Because,” Miles finally said, “you’re a nice guy, Sawyer.
